Inside Open Infrastructure: July 2025
The Global Leaders Powering the Future of Open Source Infrastructure
Last month, the OpenInfra Foundation officially joined forces with the Linux Foundation, accelerating open source innovation and collaboration. With this change, the OpenInfra Foundation mission remains the same: building communities who write open source infrastructure software that runs in production.
Over 80 organizations have joined the OpenInfra Foundation to further this mission and increase adoption and awareness of OpenInfra projects, OpenStack, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul. Thierry Carrez, GM of the OpenInfra Foundation, recently shared his vision for how this mission will shape the next generation of open source infrastructure. These organizations are instrumental in this next chapter as we build technologies that meet the infrastructure needs of the next 15 years.
Meet these leaders and learn how your organization can join this opportunity as we build the next chapter of open source infrastructure software.

OpenStack: Open source software for creating private and public clouds
-
Running OpenStack? This is your annual chance to share feedback and architectural choices via the OpenStack User Survey to support the upstream community. The deadline to participate in this year’s analysis is Friday, August 29.
-
Are you running artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads on OpenStack, or want to share how you fine-tune your deployment to support them? Get involved with the OpenInfra AI Working Group and help draft the upcoming OpenStack for AI White Paper!
-
In July, the OpenStack community celebrated 15 years of OpenStack! Check out photos from the global celebration.
-
Some highlights among the 80+ OpenStack sessions on the OpenInfra Summit schedule include:
- From Zero to Code - How to get started in OpenStack
- Multi-Arch OpenStack in Production: ARM64/x86 Bare Metal and Hypervisors with Kolla-Ansible
- Talking with Your Infrastructure: AI Agents for OpenStack and Kubernetes Infra
- All aboard the Release Train: Lessons from our last 100 OpenStack upgrades
- OpenStack at Scale: Operating a bare metal cloud for quant research
Kata Containers: The speed of containers, the security of VMs
-
The new KataContainers 3.19.1 release is now available!
-
Check out the new blog post and whitepaper to learn more about Ant Group’s Cloud Workload Protection Platform (CWPP) that relies on Kata Containers and eBPF.
-
If you’re evaluating or using Kata Containers, please take a few minutes to fill out the User Survey and provide feedback to the community!
-
Check out the Kata Containers-related sessions on the OpenInfra Summit schedule:
- Towards Secure Container Infrastructure on RISC-V: the Development from rust-vmm to Kata-Containers
- Enabling Confidential Computing Throughout the Virtualization Stack
- Enhancing Container Security with Kata Containers and eBPF at Ant Group
- LLM Infrastructure Landscape and Trends: Insights from Open-Source Ecosystem Data
- How Ant Group Achieves Data Security in LLM Inference with Kata-Based Confidential Computing
- Next Generation Edge: Edge Computing Architectures for AI/ML Use Cases
OpenDev: Free software needs free tools
- Zuul test node images are now configured through the zuul-providers repo and not the project-config repo. This change allows us to test updates to the image builds before they are deployed and used by Zuul. Details for specific image builds and uploads can be found in the Zuul dashboard.
- Debian Trixie and CentOS Stream 10 test nodes have been added. Start testing the new Debian Trixie release now.
- The OpenDev team is considering using Matrix for team communications. Weigh in on the spec here.
StarlingX: A fully featured cloud for the distributed edge
-
The StarlingX community has finished configuring servers provided by Arm in the community lab made available by Wind River Systems. They are now working on enabling Arm support in the StarlingX platform.
-
If you’re evaluating or using StarlingX, please take a few minutes to fill out the User Survey and provide feedback to the community!
-
Check out the StarlingX-related sessions on the OpenInfra Summit schedule:
Zuul: Stop merging broken code
-
No new Zuul releases have been published since 12.1.0, but work continues on some important efforts. The Nodepool in Zuul spec implementation is well underway, and support for Ansible 11 is in the pipeline. Zuul operators should start thinking about dropping Ansible 8 support as Zuul will drop Ansible 8 when Ansible 11 is included.
